Infoworld by way of Yahoo News is reporting that adding Windows XP to the Asus Eee PC will double the latter's price compared to existing versions running Linux.
Asus reportedly will sell a version of the Eee PC with Windows XP in mature markets such as the U.S. and Europe for around US$1,000, while a configuration aimed at emerging market nations will cost about $500. XP-based Eee PCs are expected javascript:void(0)

I find this to be a good development. Obviously ASUS would have to devote a lot of resources to the optimization, customizing, and increased tech support necessary to make resource inefficient Windows run well on a minimalist PC platform for which it was not really intended.
Doubling the price should encourage sticking to the standard, efficient Xandros Linux while leaving the Windows XP option open for a minority of business users who would still get a very portable notebook device at or below the cost of competing products.
Obviously more advanced users could buy a Linux-based EEE and then replace the OS with Windows XP at far lower cost. Most likely, however, the default Windows XP installation, absent ASUS optimization and tweaking, would be very inefficient and run poorly on the EEE.
What is 'low cost' at $500 or $1000 ??? No device for me any more!!
Why do you need to run Windows XP? Save half the cost with Linux which will offer better EEE performance and fewer headaches.
Low cost ?
Low cost is a "normal" notebook for the same price.
Here in europe i can get a x41 thinkpad for 800 eur!!
$1000 for a lousy 7" notebook??
no way! more expensive than the thinkpad! $250-$300 and i'm on it. otherwise - never an asus!
Poor (and incorrect) article. The EEE is already available in the UK from RM.com - it says you need to be involved in education but this is not the case. The 4GB / 512MB version is available now and the 2GB / 256MB is available towards the end of this month. They are selling for £169 and £199 respectively.
I don't think some of the posters seem to be able to read correctly. The US$1000 is for the WINDOWS XP version only, not the standard LINUX version.
The EEE should not be compared to bulky, heavy 15 inch screen notebook computers. The EEE is designed specifically for portability, light weight, and convenience.

I guess from the consumers' point of view, the more choices the better. However at a $1000 price tag, I would have to say it does not offer much choice, especially given the alternatives at that price point.
What I don't understand is that Asus keeps telling us the Eee PC is not a notebook, that's why its warranty is limited compared to the standard two year global standard Asus provides for its notebook product line.
But now it intends to offer a version with Windows XP bundled. Why not Windows CE/Pocket PC or Windows Embedded? Aren't these more suitable for non-notebook products? By offering Windows XP, Asus is actually affirming the Eee PC IS a notebook, contrary to their marketing efforts.
Still no reason.
For $1000 i can get a Kohjinsha SH6 with windows vista, dont ?
Hi luiz,
That's right! I totally forgot about the Kohjinsha SH6. In fact, I almost bought one last time I was in Hong Kong.
Good point.
~$1000 and you have an Thinkpad X41! 12", thinner than EEE and much more power and battery! AND THINKPAD! So EEE for $1000 would be impudence!
Hi Maria,
Yup. I have had two TPs before. The 560 which is still with me and an A21M which someone whom I thought was a friend borrowed permanently. Considering how long they last, they actually give excellent value for your money.
But if I had the spare $1000 now, I would go with the Kohjinsha SH6 that Luiz mentioned. In fact, I almost bought one while on a Hong Kong trip earlier this year but just didn't have enough time.
