Changing Eee PC's Wallpaper

From reader Mary Ellen Lee -

Hi and many many thanks for the inspiring info on the EeePC.

I bought one. For reasons having largely to do with the amount of travel i do on NYC and Ch-town subways, and bus/train/Easyjet in Europe, i bought an "open box" 2G Surf model in Blush Pink. First i only need this to do web chat and surfing beyond what my Blackberry Pearl can already do superbly; and because my real ultralight notebook computer is still too heavy for my old shoulders; and .... in pink, who would steal it ?? :-)...

...My conclusion by day 2 of ownership was that i could live long and prosper with the 2G Surf as is............ *BUT*.... something had to be done about the already too boring Easy Desktop themes.

So for any who might follow my path toward the 2G Surf, to change these is pretty easy.

Firstly, locate them ... hint: they are in /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher directory and named variously:

accessibility_internet_wallpaper.jpg
accessibility_learn_wallpaper.jpg
accessibility_play_wallpaper.jpg
accessibility_settings_wallpaper.jpg
accessibility_work_wallpaper.jpg
business_internet_wallpaper.jpg
business_learn_wallpaper.jpg
business_play_wallpaper.jpg
business_settings_wallpaper.jpg
business_work_wallpaper.jpg
home_internet_wallpaper.jpg
home_learn_wallpaper.jpg
home_play_wallpaper.jpg
home_settings_wallpaper.jpg
home_work_wallpaper.jpg
login_page.jpg
student_internet_wallpaper.jpg
student_learn_wallpaper.jpg
student_play_wallpaper.jpg
student_settings_wallpaper.jpg
student_work_wallpaper.jpg

the "accessibility" are the "Blue" theme wallpapers; the "business" are what the chooser calls "Silver"; "home" = "Sunset" and of course "student" = "Green"...
they seem to have used the "internet" .jpg in for the Favourites tab as well as the Internet tab; very efficient!

Secondly, copy these to a USB drive or ftp them to your desktop for alteration; attached is a simple altered example that also reduced the physical file size of accessibility_internet_wallpaper.jpg.

It's probably a good idea to keep a backup copy of the originals somewhere.

Lastly, copy the altered .jpgs from USB drive or ftp back to the /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher directory

Changes are dynamic as you copy over the files and move from tab to tab, but it's probably a more "polite" idea to restart the EeePC after copying in the files.

************

Other than that, any suggestions about carrying cases of course *do* apply to the Surfs ... mine fits nicely in any number of bookshop-purchases free bags, Fossil handbags and into the smallest size LL Bean camping toiletries kit

(.. those aren't as useful now that the airlines have the liquids restrictions except for the unbreakable mirror and 1000-year-lasting really handy zippers :-) !

Perhaps I've missed something here, but I'm having trouble overwriting the original files with mine. I tried to copy the new files into the folder but it won't let me paste!

What am I doing wrong? I thought I followed the instructions accurately...

I think the error reported by Esther is "you don't gave permission to use /opt/..."

I have the same trouble and I'm too newbie to find out to get the permission..

I have an Eee PC 901 and have tried to change the wallpaper as you suggest.
However, it won't let me over write the JPGs in this file as they are read only. It won't let me deleted them or replace them with a similarly named file from my memory stick.
In properties it tells me that, 'Permissions cannot be modified because you do not own the folder'.
Seems strange as I do own the computer!
Any ideas? Do I have the wrong kind of Eee PC?

PS I tried to use the I4U link method but it doesn't tell me how to log in as an administrator. I have set up the password for it, but where do I put it?!

Thanks,

Howard.

Hi Howard,

Can you please tell me exactly how you are trying to do it on a step-by-step basis? Then we can take it from there.

Hey Xujiren,

I have 'Ctrl-Alt-T'd and logged in as a super user (su) and then opened the file manager and tried to drag and drop and also tried to copy and paste the JPG files into the directory, but it won't let me do it.
Should I be copying them in the window where I logged in as a SU - DOS style?

Thanks for your help,

Howard

OK to change the desktop you need to know about linux commands if you have linux eee pc.this site explains about moving files from 1 directory to the other..http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl1_mv.htm

Next...the business_internet_wallpaper.jpg in the directory /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher is the first wallpaper you see at start up..

Pick a wallpaper you like from the internet and save it somewhere on your eee pc...like y Documents ..Then rename that chosenwallpaper.jpg to business_internet_wallpaper.jpg

Open a terminal and move the file you renamed for the one in the opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher...it will overwrite it. YOU have to be superuser to move files without any permissions needed...

before you move files type in the terminal(ctrl-alt-t) su...it will ask you a password...This password is the same password you chose when you bought the asus and use it at the first time. the first time you start up the asus you must enter a username and a password to proceed...

itś done now! this is only for 1 tab wallpaper(the first one) the other ones I don the name of the wallpapers..

Good luck,

rieven

Help. So to set the stage, I take my brand new Asus out of the box. I create my user name and password as per the quick start card. So I'm trying to 'set' a photo as a wallpaper and the error message is that I don't a 'set' program. So I found your blog. I also find out as I'm rooting around that I'm not logged in as the 'owner'. How is that? I'm quickly starting to hate linux. Why wouldn't the first one to turn this thing on be the owner. How do I log in as the owner because I cannot touch the sub-directory where the default wallpapers are saved.

Thanks

So to set the stage, I just got my brand new, unused EEE. I logged in as per the quick start card. Me, the first user. Well, why is it then that I'm not logged in as the 'OWNER'??? Please help. I'm really starting to hate Linux. I found your blog because I couldn't change the wallpaper. I cannot write to the subdirectory where those default wall papers are because I am not logged in as user. I even found away to open the 'bash' window. Yeah no help to me.

Please help.
