ASUS Eee PC used on ATM fraud in Brazil

Submitted by Rafael Capanema -

Thieves here in Brazil used an Eee PC to perform an ATM fraud. The laptop was connected *inside* the machine so it would store customers' information and passwords. The criminals damaged all the others ATMs so the customers would be forced to use the hacked machine.

Even before the investigation begun, one of the thieves went to a police station to register a car accident. He was immediately arrested, as well as his two crime partners.

There's a video (in Portuguese) about it on the Globo website. It shows the thieves as they were caught by the security cameras and also the confiscated black Eee PC.

Translated site can be read here.

Thanks, Rafael!

I'm surprised it's taken this long for the bad guys to start using the hack ability of the eeepc for nefarious uses.

In all honesty I used mine to hack a local wireless signal when I moved to a new house and was without my own service for a week.

Still, good to hear that the bad guys got caught.

Hi gmc,

It is also possible the bad guys have been using the Eee PC for nefarious uses since it first came out. The Brazilian bad guys might happen to be just the first to be caught. :(
